International Women's Day 2022: Q&A with Mel Chai on #HerNameHerStory

International Women's Day ("IWD") is celebrated annually on 8th March to commemorate the achievements of women around the world. It offers an opportunity to call for change and spread the message of female empowerment and gender equality.

In conjunction with the celebration, our campaign #HerNameHerStory is born to bring a message to our society that Women around us are strong and fearless. We are capable of offering the same as men and we deserve equal opportunities and enjoyment. We believe that every woman has a story to share about themselves.

We are excited and thrilled to announce that we have invited a few inspiring women across different industries to share with us their journey on becoming who they are today.

The second guest with us on this campaign is Mel Chaico-founder of Jujumello Intimates. We are really excited to have Mel with us to share her battles and successes. She is an entrepreneur, a cancer survivor and she is like a sunflower, full of enthusiasm and passion.

Q1. Can you share with our followers a brief introduction of yourself?

I’m a lot of things. A Christian, a cancer survivor, a visionary, and I would like to think that I’m a vibrant person. My name is Mel, turning 29 though I still always feel like a kid.

Q2. What was your key driving force to become an entrepreneur?

Just like an artist, their profession is not a job, it’s a calling. Artists feel that they have something inside them that they need to express. And they need to share it with others. My driving force was always to express, (oh yea, I was very into crafty stuff when I was a kid!) and now I gained a second driving force – money $$. Only by making money I could sustain my will to create and share.

Q3. What has been your most satisfying moment in your career?

When one of my customers told me they have switched from LaSenza and VS to Jujumello’s bralettes and that one time when I was invited to a business conference in Singapore as one of the panel speakers – I don’t know which one was more satisfying than the other.

Q4. Have you faced any barriers in your career due to being a woman? If so, how did you overcome them?

Not so much. I always felt if I play my cards right, I could easily thrive as a woman. I have my masculine and feminine sides and I pick and choose the side that would help me get what I want. In fact, it is easier being woman, I get away with things more easily when I play dumb and cute sometimes 😉

Q5. What are the tips/advice you can provide to women who are thinking about starting their own business?

Get your friends to help even if you have to ask for free services in the beginning. You have to be thick-faced enough to ask for favors with the belief that one day you’d be established enough to return favors. You can take care of your family and do what you like all in heels. You can do it all if you believe.

Q6. We understand that you are a cancer survivor. What was your biggest self-discovery or revelation after you were diagnosed?

Is that I have been living my life wrong all these years. Besides diet and lifestyle, I never knew that negative emotions could become cancerous tumors. It is God giving me a wake-up call to let go of unforgiveness, resentment, shame and guilt that I have been harbouring for years and live life with true joy and peace. If you wish to find out more of my story, write to me at or DM me on IG @jelitarhh 😊

Q7. What are the top 3 values that you live by?

Don’t fear, forgive and always choose to give.
